Neurodiversity Support Celebrates Diverse Minds

Dana Jenkins-Post started her role at San Jacinto College with one resolve: "I can do more."
Throughout her career, she has helped everyone from K-12 special education students to adults seeking disability support. She watched them transition to college, search for jobs, or navigate community services. Often, support dropped off after high school.

Neurodiversity Vocabulary
Neurodivergent: Describes people whose brains differ significantly from the “typical” population. Whether innate or acquired, these differences include medical conditions, mental health responses, learning disabilities, and other neurodevelopmental disabilities (e.g., autism, brain injury, trauma, dyslexia, ADHD, etc.).

Neurodiverse: Refers to a group of people — rather than a single person — whose brains are different from each other.

Neurodiversity: Akin to biodiversity; a biological fact that human minds are diverse.

Chesmar Foundation is Helping Tackle the Teaching Shortage

The Chesmar Foundation donated $900,000 to support Texas residents pursuing a four-year teaching degree at San Jacinto College. Half of the donation has created the Chesmar Teacher Scholarship Fund, while the other half funds alternative certification program testing. The Chesmar Foundation’s support covers tuition, fees, and essential course materials, enabling students to complete their programs and earn their teacher certification without financial burden.

Over the summer, San Jacinto College held a Future Educators Celebration to honor the first cohort of Bachelor of Applied Science in early childhood education. More than 170 guests were in attendance of the event. Faculty and administration chatted with enrolled and potential students to discuss their role in the future of education

$4,173,379 total dollars were raised in fiscal year 2023-2024 by the Foundation:

Kaneka’s generous $100,000 donation to the San Jacinto College Foundation will support the CPET building’s sustainability and upkeep. This contribution ensures CPET continues to offer state-of-the-art training equipment, technology, and curricula, especially benefiting nondestructive testing students.
